PRACTICAL GUIDE / Adhesive Application Brief
Describe the assembly before comparing adhesive formulas.
This brief collects the application information needed for a product-specific discussion. It is an information-gathering tool, not a recommendation that an adhesive is suitable for every listed material or use.
STEP 01
Identify the surfaces
- Name the actual substrate pair and any coating, finish or surface treatment.
- Describe the condition in which the surfaces reach the bonding operation.
- Provide samples or accurate material references when a trade name alone is ambiguous.
STEP 02
Describe the joint and use
- Share the joint geometry, relevant dimensions and intended bond-line gap.
- Describe the service environment and loads/exposures the application needs to tolerate.
- Identify whether color, appearance, gap filling or a particular finishing process matters to the assembly.
STEP 03
Describe the production process
- State the time available for assembly and the handling/fixture requirements.
- Describe the application temperature and proposed dispensing equipment.
- Confirm that cartridge format, mixing ratio, mixer and process conditions will be checked against the specific product documentation.
STEP 04
Plan the evaluation
- Request the current TDS and SDS for each candidate model/formula.
- Agree trial materials, test conditions and acceptance criteria with the responsible technical team.
- Record the evaluated product and process version before any production decision.
WORKED BRIEF EXAMPLE
Example: two plastic assemblies may need different reviews.
“Plastic to plastic” leaves the actual polymers, coatings, gap and production conditions unspecified. A useful enquiry identifies the material grades or references and the intended assembly process. Do not transfer working-time or mixing-ratio values from one model to another because both are described as MMA or epoxy.
